Which of the following words, if substituted for “brilliant” in line 26, would LEAST change the meaning of the sentence?

The Chicago and Calumet Rivers originally flowed into the St. Lawrence by way of Lake Michigan, but having been redirected by constructing canals so that the water now empties into the Mississippi by way of the Illinois River.
想知道为什么E的"the construction of..." 比 A的by constructing更好? RON说because we are talking about the process from a detached standpoint (i.e. there's no mention of a a subject who is directly involved )vs. the army engineering corps redirected the rivers by constructing canals. Verbal nouns (like "the exposure") are impersonal: they don't convey the idea that the subject is directly involved.Gerund generally do convey the idea that the subject is directly involved in the process。

At an orientation meeting, the travelers were told that a visa, a landing card, and evidence of inoculation against typhoid fever would be needed by each of them.
